We take a holistic approach to end malnutrition by equipping mothers on key agriculture, nutrition, and health topics.
Our roots are in Rwanda
Since 2009, we have worked hand-in-hand with local communities to provide solutions to malnutrition. Our innovative curriculum on agriculture, nutrition, and health topics is designed in partnership with local mothers, and our trainings are led by talented educators who come directly from the communities they serve. We are proudly Rwandan-led.
We believe in changing systems, not treating symptoms.
Integrating agriculture and nutrition into the health system is the only sustainable solution to effectively treat and prevent malnutrition. We work in close partnership with the Government of Rwanda by teaming up with Community Health Workers, delivering trainings at local health clinics, and advising national policy.
Agriculture
Farming for life, not just a living
The long-term cure for chronic malnutrition isn’t found at a health clinic, but it can be grown in one’s own backyard. We partner with malnourished families to plant home gardens full of diverse vegetables so they will have a lasting source of nutrition. We provide seeds and hands-on trainings in regenerative, climate-resilient, and locally accessible agriculture techniques that are good for people and the planet.
Nutrition
Knowledge is the key to change
For parents to provide their families with nutritious food, they must first understand what nutrition is. We teach parents essential knowledge like the benefits of a healthy diet, what forms a balanced meal and breastfeeding best practices. Our innovative One Pot One Hour lesson demonstrates how to cook a healthy meal with limited time and resources so that every mother can provide her children with the nutrients they need to thrive.
Health
A comprehensive approach to a complex problem
In engaging trainings, full of song and dance, we educate families on a full range of health topics including proper WASH and hygiene practices especially important for disease prevention. Our curriculum goes beyond the basics, addressing difficult topics like family planning and gender-based violence. And, we step outside the classroom: during the heigh of COVID-19, we provided 10,169 moms and dads with nutrition-sensitive and COVID-19 awareness measures.
Our Programs
Maternal Nutrition Program
Inspired by mothers who said they wished they had known more about nutrition before their children became malnourished, we began working with pregnant women to prevent the onset of malnutrition.
Expanding through Partnership
With over a decade of experience in Rwanda, GHI has emerged as an expert in the region on nutrition-sensitive agriculture interventions. By partnering with like-minded organizations, we are expanding to new people and places, such as schools, and refugee camps.
Sustainability
Our goal is to incorporate agriculture into the prevention and treatment of malnutrition. Even after graduation, we continue engaging program graduates, to integrate our message and knowledge throughout their community.
